Hope everyone has a great Independence Day. Be sure to remember our soldiers that are still fighting abroad for freedom and cannot be home with their families today. God Bless Them.

Valentine’s Day Advice

Here are a few things I thought up over the past week that I feel every guy should take into account on Valentine’s Day.

  1. If you can’t afford a dozen roses, go with one. Any other number requires a detailed explanation that you just don’t have.
  2. When you give your girlfriend a rose, you might not want to hint that it is a symbol of your love, because a rose may be beautiful but it will also be dead within a week.
  3. If you give your girlfriend a bear for Valentines day, don’t try to joke around by saying, “See, I got it because our relationship is unBEARable. Get it?” She gets it, but you probably won’t be getting what you’ll be looking for later that night.
  4. If you are going to read her the poem “Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day?” on Valentine’s Day, be sure that it is the Shakespeare version and not the Moss version.
  5. Don’t eat some of her chocolates before you give them to her. I know she may be your princess but the excuse of “checking for poison” just doesn’t fly in the 21st century.
  6. If your girlfriend says “Aww, you shouldn’t have…” when she opens your gift, don’t reassure her by saying “Don’t worry, it cost less than your Christmas present.”

Other than those few things, remember to be a gentleman and that this day is all about her.

Charlie Wilson’s War

Charlie Wilson’s War opens today in theaters and has such big name actors as Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts in it. The movie is based on the true story of Congressman Charlie Wilson who played a role in beating the Soviets in Afghanistan. Pajamas Media posted an article a while back about the movie and I agree with their take on it.

The movie would not have been made were it not for the moral in its closing minutes: American adventures overseas can have unpredictable effects. Sorkin makes the point nicely, with a tale about a zen master, but being clever and being right are two different things. Sorkin all but says that a few million U.S. bucks for schools in Afghanistan after the Soviet war would have prevented 9/11; yet the U.S. for decades has done everything for Saudi Arabia but send it flowers on Mother’s Day. None of our efforts prevented that rancid kingdom from nursing most of the 9/11 hijackers.

I agree with this point but I feel you can take it a step farther and compare it to our current situation in Iraq. If we don’t help rebuild Iraq and stabilize the country, it could very well become a hotbed for terrorism much like Afghanistan became back in the 90’s. I don’t know if this was a connection that the movie was trying to make (which I doubt it was) but I feel that it is a legitimate conclusion.

Yep, Sprint is offering its customers a 10.5 million dollar cell phone package. Why so expensive? Well they decided to be kind enough to throw in a free tropical island on the side.
