Belgium-sized algae farm enough to meet ‘all demands of commercial airlines’

Algae is once againg makings its way into the headlines with a Japanese airline looking to be the fourth airline to use biofuels in a test flight tomorrow. However, the most interesting tidbit in this article is the claim that an algae farm the size of Belgium would produce enough fuel to power all commercial airlines worldwide.

P.S. For those of you who aren’t near a map, Belgium is quite a small country.

Once again, too much snow for Al Gore’s GW hysteria

Ha Ha.

GORE HEARING ON WARMING MAY BE PUT ON ICE
Mon Jan 26 2009 17:59:26 ET

Al Gore is scheduled before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday morning to once again testify on the ‘urgent need’ to combat global warming.

But Mother Nature seems ready to freeze the proceedings.

A ‘Winter Storm Watch’ has been posted for the nation’s capitol and there is a potential for significant snow… sleet… or ice accumulations.

“I can’t imagine the Democrats would want to showcase Mr. Gore and his new findings on global warming as a winter storm rages outside,” a Republican lawmaker emailed the DRUDGE REPORT. “And if the ice really piles up, it will not be safe to travel.”

A spokesman for Sen. John Kerry, who chairs the committee, was not immediately available to comment on contingency plans.

Global warming advocates have suggested this year’s wild winter spells are proof of climate change.

“I pledge to be of service to Barack Obama”

No people, that is not a quote from me, but it just so happens to be a quote from this “I pledge” video:

Yea, empty promises, all of them. First off, how in the world is Demi Moore going to free 1 million from slavery in the next five years? This freeing of 1 million slaves is going to even be more complicated if she won’t advocate military intervention. But then again, with The One in charge of the military, is it really that wrong to advocate force? I mean, he is pratically a god and would never decide to do anything wrong.

Then there is the idiot wearing pink (I don’t even know who he is) who pledges to “be of service to Barack Obama.” I’m sure that guy will not be found the moment Obama calls for “sacrifices” and ask for volunteers for military ’service’. I mean, Biden is saying that Afghanistan is in trouble so I’m sure The One will be in need of some able bodies pretty soon.

Wait, what am I saying, I’m sure Biden’s statements are going to be used as future justification to cut and run on the Afghanistan people. Thank goodness we at least won in Iraq.

About OriginOil, Inc.:

OriginOil, Inc. is developing a breakthrough technology that will transform algae, the most promising source of renewable oil, into a true competitor to petroleum. Much of the world’s oil and gas is made up of ancient algae deposits. Today, our technology will produce “new oil” from algae, through a cost-effective, high-speed manufacturing process. This endless supply of new oil can be used for many products, such as diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, plastics and solvents, without the global warming effects of petroleum. Other oil-producing feedstock, such as corn and sugarcane, often destroy vital farmlands and rainforests, disrupt global food supplies and create new environmental problems. Our unique technology, based on algae, is targeted at fundamentally changing our source of oil without disrupting the environment or food supplies. To learn more about OriginOil™, please visit our website at www.originoil.com.

As I have said many, many times, algae has great potential to become a major player in the alternative fuel market and even the fuel market as a whole.

At Least the Market seems to have Faith in Obama

Oh wait, you thought I was serious? Nope. It seems that today, the DOW experienced the worst inauguration day drop in its history.

Surprise, Surprise

Wow, gun sales are actually way up since Obama was elected. I wonder who could have ever predicted that.

Things are getting hectic at Huffington

Huffington Post seems to be having some difficulties reconciling the mounting evidence against the theory of man made global warming and their oft repeated ‘facts’. As we have seen recently, some at Huffington have accepted the truth while other are demanding the thought police to take action in order to stop the spread of the heretical “natural climate cycle” theories.

Algae Biofuel Company Algenol: ‘We’re a year away from sales’

It looks like we are coming closer and closer to having biofuels from algae with algae biofuel company Algenol stating that it was a year away from selling their fuel.

Nobody is more bullish on algae than Algenol’s Woods, who founded the company in 2006 but has been pondering algae’s potential since he came up with the basic idea behind Algenol’s technology as an undergraduate in 1984. Most algae firms harvest the organisms and squeeze them to extract oil that’s then processed into a fuel, but Algenol’s strains essentially sweat oil in a gaseous form that can be condensed into a liquid. Woods says his system can yield 6,000 gallons (22,700 L) of ethanol per acre annually, compared to 370 gallons (1,400 L) per acre for corn ethanol. At his Florida test facility, Woods kneels and taps on one of his holding tanks. Clear droplets cling to the inside of the lid. “This is it,” he says. “That’s what we’ve learned here — this really does work.”

Woods will soon get a chance to test his idea on a massive scale. With a group of partners that includes a scion of the Corona beer family, Algenol is poised to break ground on a commercial-scale facility in the Sonoran desert of northern Mexico. The plant’s seaside location enables the company to use seawater to grow the algae, and a nearby coal plant could provide concentrated CO2 to turbocharge production. But not everyone is convinced that either algae or Algenol is ready for prime time. “I would say the hype is well ahead of the reality,” says John Benemann, an expert in algae biofuels, who notes that no commercial method yet exists to capture CO2 from power plants and deliver it to algae facilities.

Obama’s Energy Czar Carol Browner is a Card Carrying Socialist

Why does this not even surprise me? I mean, when you want to increase the government’s control of our energy use, which will in turn affect every other aspect of our country, you can’t help but have socialist tendencies.

Energy output of Algae biofuel was “higher than the regular fuel” in test flight

Today, Continental Airlines successfully conducted a test flight where one engine ran on a 50-50 mixture of regular fuel and a biofuel mixture of algae and jatropha. The other engine just ran strictly on regular jet fuel.

Anyways, beside from the fact that the plane actually took off and landed successfully, something else was discovered: the engine running on the 50-50 mixture actually had a higher energy output than the regular fuel one. Take a look:

During the flight, two pilots put the aircraft through a series of normal and non-normal flight maneuvers, such as shutting down and restarting the engine in mid-flight and power accelerations and decelerations. An engineer was on board to record flight data.

The flight operated with a biofuel blend of 50 percent biologically derived fuel and 50 percent traditional jet fuel in one of the engines. The other engine ran on traditional jet fuel, allowing Continental to compare how the fuels perform.

‘Slight Difference’

“They did notice a slight difference in some of the readings indicating that the energy output of the biofuel was higher than the regular fuel,” Messing said. “ They were essentially getting more thrust from the biofuel-powered engine using a lower amount of fuel than from the regular engine.”

Yes, you read that correctly, the biofuel mixture actually produced more energy than regular fuel. If this results ends up being the standard for algae based biofuels, algae could end up being a replacement for regular oil strictly on the grounds of efficiency.

Now all they have to do is make sure that these fuels can be produced at commercially competitive prices.
