Michelle Obama speaks at USC
Yesterday, Michelle Obama, wife of presidential hopeful Barack Obama, visited the University of South Carolina and gave a speech to the student body. The doors for this event opened up at 4:30 with the event itself starting at 5:00. I arrived roughly ten minutes after doors opened and was shocked to basically find only standing room left. The room was the same size as the one given to Mike Huckabee back in September but was much more crowded this time around. As with every other Barack Obama event I have attended, a choir was there and sang several songs including one where the chorus repeated the word “change” several times. They didn’t just sing this song once, but twice during event; once at the beginning and again at the end. I wonder why…

Before the Michelle got up on stage and gave her speech, several of the organizers got up to speak about why they support Obama. The reasons they stated ranged from his stance on Darfur to education reform. After about fifteen minutes of this type of introductions, Michelle Obama finally took the stage to give her speech which lasted almost as long as her husband’s roughly 40 minute speech on Sunday. One thing is for certain, the Obama’s sure don’t skimp out on what they have to say.

My overall impression of Mrs. Obama is that she is an excellent orator and possibly the best I have heard thus far in any of the multiple speeches I have attended over the past couple of months. I’m going to warn you now, if you are looking for an article that attacks Michelle, this is not going to be it. She was very genuine in her speech and didn’t shift the blame around onto other people. Unlike the candidates who like to bring up George Bush and other people, the only person she ever brought up was her husband and I have to respect her for that.
Her speech focused on what’s wrong in America and on most of the issues, I can agree that something needs to be done. The only thing that we may differ on is how we feel these problems need to be fixed. Me, being a conservative, prefer that if there is to be any government intervention, it should happen at the state levels instead of the federal level. For example, if there is to be any minimum wage (which I’ve yet to be convinced is a good idea), it should be decided by the states, not the federal government.

Anyways, if you want to see the whole speech, you can watch it one YouTube by following the links below. If you want a good lesson on how a public speaker should sound, I would highly recommend watching the video. She really is an amazing speaker.

After her speech was over and she had finished with the crowd and the reporters, Michelle took the time to thank and speak privately with the “Gamecocks for Obama” who organized the event. Now you might be wondering how I ended up in a room with this group but lets just say I know some people. During the ten minute period she shared with the roughly twenty people present, she took some pictures with the group along with answering several questions. Since I was the token conservative in the room, I mainly stayed off to the side. However, I did offer to take a group picture that included Michelle.

Now, with the South Carolina democratic primary just two days away, you might be wondering who I would tell you to vote for if you’re a conservative who didn’t vote in the republican primary last week. Let me just say this: If you want someone who the republicans might have a chance to beat according to recent polls, choose Hillary Clinton. However, you run the risk of her actually getting elected and then completely screwing up the country with Bill by her side. If you want someone who possibly won’t mess the country up that much and hasn’t been “corrupted by Washington,” go Obama. He at least seems to be genuine and and have good intentions. But then again, as the German proverb says, “The road to ruin is paved with good intentions.” As for Edwards, just don’t.
The election this November is going to be one of those major elections that could very well alter the course of our country. At the rate its going, I will probably vote for whatever republican candidate is nominated (even if it is McCain) so don’t think this article was meant to sway you to voting democrat. I was just laying out the facts as I see them. The good news is that I only have about two more days of covering all this liberal stuff before I can go back to normal. Thank goodness for that.
UPDATE (6:23pm EST)
I have fixed the videos for Part 1 and Part 3. They originally had no audio but now they do. Sorry about the inconvenience.
