The Invisible Tank

This is just to cool to ignore. Britain has just developed a tank that can project the image of the view of the surrounding area onto the tank, rendering it invisible.

A soldier, who was at the trials, said: “This technology is incredible. If I hadn’t been present I wouldn’t have believed it. I looked across the fields and just saw grass and trees - but in reality I was staring down the barrel of a tank gun.”

Now, I just want to point out that the picture they include in the article of a tank IS NOT the actual tank referred to in the story.

US Casualties are DECREASING

Gateway Pundit has once again put together some nice charts that illustrate a decline in monthly casualties in Iraq. In fact, October has had the fewest casualties in the past 2 years. This is promising news but it still may be too early to determine if this is a steady trend.

Egypt’s Nuclear Ambitions

Yes, even as we are placing sanctions on Iran for wanting to create, what they claim, a peaceful nuclear program, Egypt is seeking to create several nuclear power plants of its own. The best part is, the US doesn’t seem to have a problem with this.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the United States would not object to Egypt’s program as long as Cairo adhered to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and International Atomic Energy Agency guidelines.

Now, I know that Egypt may be more friendly to the United States but their county still isn’t what most would call a free society. In fact, both Egypt and Iran have close to the same scores from FreedomHouse.org, an organization that rates a country’s political and civil liberty freedoms. If both are considered “not free” countries, I don’t know why we wouldn’t mind letting one country pursue “peaceful nuclear activities” while sanctioning the other. I personally feel that without a free, civilian run government, it is dangerous to freely trust a country with nuclear material. Even if this current Egyptian “president” actually does pursue solely peaceful nuclear means, what about his successor? A nation with a free government accountable to the people would be the only kind of country that I would feel safe helping set up a nuclear power plant program.

Top Conservatives and Liberals

UK’s The Telegraph is in the process of publishing their picks for the top 100 conservatives and liberals. The surprising part is that many democrats are considered conservative and republicans and considered liberal.

Although there are many Republicans on the conservative list and many liberals on the Democratic list, not all 200 are aligned with a party. The key to inclusion was the term “influence” – which people do, and will, most affect American politics both in terms of ideas and the enactment of policy.

This list is comprised of many different people from politicians to actors and bloggers. As of today, the top sixty in each category have yet to be published but will be published in the coming days.

We must persevere

In his blog today, Chuck Norris commented on America’s inability to fight a prolonged war and why Huckabee would be a good choice to continue the War on Terror.

It’s unfortunate that it seems America can no longer fight a war it can’t win in a minimal amount of time. We don’t have the patience we used to. God forbid we get into a war that requires our perseverance before our preference to finish. Is that not where we are today with the war on terror?

As a commander-in-chief, Huckabee will persevere. Why? He explains, “Withdrawal would have serious strategic consequences for us and horrific humanitarian consequences for the Iraqis.” And for Americans too, as our absence from the Middle East region will leave a vacuum for someone to fill – and the likely candidate to fill that hole will be an enemy of the state.

I do believe Huckabee would be a good choice both for the humanitarian and security aspects that this War on Terror involves.

Happy Stephen Colbert Day!

Yes, today marks the first annual Stephen Colbert Day in South Carolina. Colbert was in town to accept the key to the city of Columbia and prove to everyone that his run for candidacy wasn’t a joke. For those of you who are unaware, Stephen Colbert is a comedian who is the host of the Colbert Report on Comedy Central. About a week and a half ago, Colbert announced his intentions to run for President, and the fact that he will only be running in South Carolina.

In his roughly ten minute long speech, Colbert made several campaign promises such as, if elected president, he will “crush Georgia” and also Tennessee “for good measure.” I suspect that the Tennessee part was added just to assuage our anger for our previous day’s loss against the Volunteers. As expected, there wasn’t any of the typical campaigning substance you would hear from the other top candidates. Nevertheless, he drew a surprisingly large crowd for it being 9 o’clock on a Sunday morning. I can guarantee that a majority of students attending probably haven’t seen 9 a.m. in the past two month of school and definitely not on Sunday.

After his announcement of candidacy, Colbert originally wanted to run as both a Republican and Democrat candidate but, after discovering the cost of $25,000 to be considered a Republican candidate in South Carolina, the odds are he will only appear on the Democrat’s ticket. To run as a Democrat, you can waive the fee with a petition, a big advantage that allows for a grassroots movement to form without much help from Colbert. However, Colbert may encounter some trouble with the Feds concerning his campaign sponsors (a.k.a Doritos) if he actually does run.

What is most surprising about Stephen Colbert’s candidacy is the amount of support he has already received. Only after one week, he was already tied in South Carolina with Joe Biden in the polls. Also, a group on Facebook named “1,000,000 Strong for Stephen T Colbert” has already received, at the time of this posting, 1,137,003 members. This might not seem that significant other than the fact that this is more than the Obama group with a similar name that has been around for 9 months. With primaries still a little over 2 months away, it will be interesting to see how much more support Colbert can gain.

It seems that with each passing month, more and more twists are being added to what is quickly turning into a very interesting election. And the best news is, we are still only in the primaries! Who knows what kind of madness we will witness in the months to come.

UPDATE: I posted the video I took of the last half of the Colbert’s press conference here on YouTube.

Iraq War films just aren’t cutting it

A Washington Times takes note of the new flurry of Iraq films that are coming to screen while reflecting on their predecessor’s failures to turn an audience.

It doesn’t matter how many Oscar winners are in front of or behind the camera — audiences are proving to be conscientious objectors when it comes to this fall’s surge of antiwar and anti-Bush films.

Both “In the Valley of Elah” and, more recently, “Rendition” drew minuscule crowds upon their release, which doesn’t bode well for the ongoing stream of films critical of the Iraq war and the Bush administration’s wider war on terror.

“Rendition,” which features three Oscar winners in key roles, grossed $4.1 million over the weekend in 2,250 screens for a ninth-place finish. A re-release of “The Nightmare Before Christmas” beat it, and it’s 14 years old.

When will Hollywood take the hint?

Thats right, THE Stephen Colbert plans a campaigning stop at USC’s historic Horseshoe this Sunday.

And this Sunday on the Horseshoe we’ll have another historic first, when Columbia’s mayor meets with the first South Carolina native to run for president while simultaneously hosting his own comedy show on cable TV and promoting his new bestseller.

Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert declared his candidacy last week. Columbia Mayor Bob Coble says Colbert will be in the capital city Sunday morning as the mayor proclaims “Stephen Colbert Day.”
